Hut Renovations - Fundraising and Progress

Thank you to all our donors and contributors, we are very grateful - especially to the Youth Investment Fund for your refurbishment grant awarded to us in early 2024. This page gives you information on the progress of the hut renovations and how to support us.

Work began on renovating our Scout Hut in December 2021, following establishing that the costs for demolishing and building a brand new hut were just going to be too high.

Updates on the hut refurbishment are detailed below.

- Exterior Refurb in Winter 2021-2022

- New Toilets in Autumn 2022

- Refurbished Kitchen and Explorer area in Winter 2022-2023

- Exterior walls completed in March 2024

Exterior Refurbished

Removing the asbestos within the panelling in December 2021 and January 2022 was our first project, including replacing exterior panelling as needed. Thanks to a number of parents giving up their time in June 2022, all four of our new walls were given two good coats of waterproof paint. This transformed the hut exteriors from a dull, grey undercoat colour to a dark green that blends in much more with its surroundings. We’re very grateful to those parents, and our committee, for the time and effort they put into this, on what was a hot and sticky week, perfect for drying the paint!

New Toilets

Following the transformation on the outside, work began on the inside with a total overhaul of the toilets. The feedback from children, parents and leaders, was that refurbishing the toilets was the top priority for the vast majority of people. We had plans drawn up free of charge, which we are very grateful for, with thanks to architect Peter Lindley-Hughes at S11 Architecture.

Everything was ripped out and replaced with new and modern facilities. The greatest improvement is that we now have an accessible toilet, improving access to our groups for all.

To pay for this huge improvement as well as further refurbishment to our Scout Hut we will continue to raise funds. Please consider supporting us, we appreciate all help, small and large, past and present.

Refurbished Kitchen and Explorer Area

The Explorer Room and kitchen have now been merged into one, much more usable, large space, with the old storage units reused and improved, so that there is room to store all the kit that our groups use at meetings. The interior walls and parts of the floor in the Explorer area have been replaced, with additional insulation being fitted. The interior walls of the main meeting hall have also been replaced, again with insulation inserted to make for a much cosier and more energy efficient building.

To carry out the refurbishments that have been funded by the Youth Investment Fund, our builders started work on the hut at the end of February 2024. They have already removed rotten wood from the only wall which hadn’t yet been strengthened, so all four walls have now been strengthened and are ready to have a new roof fitted.
